Money is often a taboo subject surrounded by misinformation and apprehension. Creative people, particularly, aren’t trained how to talk about money in a business setting, and after afraid to reveal their ignorance to potential clients or competitors. As a result, they may not know the best way to deal with money or be familiar with the financial techniques that will help their business succeed. The Creative Professional’s Guide to Money provides tools and advice that address many common financial questions that creative professionals have.

Ilise BenunIlise Benun is a national speaker and the author of several books. She’s a regular contributor to HOW Design and is the lead editor of the Creative Freelancer Blog. Ilise is a frequent speaker at HOW events, a regular Design Tutorial presenter and the co-founder of the Creative Freelancer Business Conference. She is the founder of Marketing Mentor, where she works closely with creative professionals, teaching them how to best develop their business through creativity, sell their services and talents, and implement efficient systems and procedures to run the business smoothly. Jason SwenkPresenter Jason is a digital-preneur and author with 12+ years running a successful digital agency until he sold it in 2011. He helps businesses establish strategies that get them to the next level, by sharing what works, so you know exactly how to build a successful business. Jason has worked with some of the biggest clients in the World from Aflac, Lotus Cars, Hitachi, AT&T, Coke and Legal Zoom. Michael FleishmanPresenter Michael Fleishman was a zombie extra in George Romero’s Day of the Dead (but don’t blink, you’ll miss him). His real day job is as a writer, freelance designer and illustrator, and teacher (which, at times, makes him feel somewhat like The Wacom Dead). He’s written for arts magazines, and has authored six books on design, illustration, and creativity. Fleishman’s Starting Your Career as a Designer will be published by Allworth Press in May, 2014. He’s currently hard at work on its sister title, Starting Your Career as an Illustrator.   • So You Want to be a Freelancer? with Michael Fleishman | This session offers excellent information for new freelancers and veterans alike. Fleishman will discuss the differences between full time employees and freelancers and explain what it takes to get started as a freelancer.

    • How to build a successful freelance business without working weekends with Tom Tumbusch | Being in business for yourself shouldn’t mean sacrificing your personal life. Freelance writer Tom Tumbusch reveals his tips and secrets for making a great living while living a great life. 
    • Is your work eating your life alive?: A parent’s perspective with Laura Foley | The work/life balancing act becomes more complicated when children are involved. Laura Foley of Laura M. Foley Design has been a freelancer since 1995 and a parent since 2002, so she’s experienced this firsthand. She shares her strategies for keeping her career and parental duties separate, setting boundaries that her children respect, and how to occupy the kids when they have time off and she doesn’t.
TRACK 2: TOOLS TO MAKE YOUR WORK & LIFE MORE ORGANIZED
  • Branding, Content, SEO: Connect the Dots to a More Powerful Web Site  – a webinar presented by Emily Brackett | Are you confused about how to improve your web site? Should you optimize it for search, improve the design and branding or create great content? You need to do all three. In this webinar we will explore how all three of these elements should work together to create a web site that effectively uses thoughtful content that engages readers and search engines.
